Alex Cardy is an award-winning Australian Director of Photography who works across films, television, documentaries, moving-image installations and expanded online projects. She has a passion for hybrid filmmaking and working between narrative and documentary projects.
Alex recently completed production on the feature documentary THE DEFENDERS directed by Matthew Bate, for Sweetshop & Green and Amazon Prime, along with a block of the young adult television series YEAR OF for Roadshow Rough Diamond and Stan, directed by Taylor Ferguson and Jess Tuckwell.
Her short films have been selected at top-tier festivals, including; Toronto International Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival and her work has premiered on Nowness and appeared at Outfest and RISING Festival. Alex’s collaboration with director Jessica Barclay Lawton has resulted in a trio of shorts; LIVING ROOM, ZEF and THE SWEETNESS. Her other shorts include WE’RE NOT HERE directed by Bonnie Moir and YOU AND ME, BEFORE AND AFTER directed by Madeleine Gottlieb.
Alex was recently awarded the Gold Cinematography Award for Documentary at both the 2021 and 2020 Australian Cinematography Society Awards for Victoria & Tasmania, as well as the Bronze Award for Art, Innovation & Specialised Cinematography in 2021.
Alex has worked on content and commercials for brands such as Nike, Google, Champion, Bonds, Jeanswest, Lee and Land Rover.
Outside of narrative and commercial work, Alex has collaborated with iconic Australian contemporary artists on their moving-image installations and film adaptations, including Patricia Piccinini’s WE WALK TOGETHER and Eugenia Lim’s ON DEMAND and DESTINY. She is also one of the founders of Sissy Screens, a digital magazine dedicated to queer screen culture supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
